What is a CSA?
CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture
When you become a CSA member, you sign up and pre-pay for a set number of weeks of produce from our four local farms. Each week, we pack up shares of freshly harvested produce and distribute it to our members. As a member, you can choose to pick up your weekly share On-Farm, or in Courtenay or Campbell River.
A CSA is a local, farm-based distribution system for organic produce – it’s all about increasing community access to high-quality, locally grown produce. And it’s about strengthening the connection between eaters and farmers.
Please read our CSA policy below to decide whether it is the right fit for you to join. If you have any questions, we’d love to chat with you. Drop us a line at: firstname.lastname@example.org
Weekly share contents
Our goal is to offer 6-8 different veggies each week, totalling an average value of $28.50. In general we try to include a bag of salad greens, a bunch of cooking greens, a bunch of root veggies, a bunch of herbs and round it out with a diversity of other seasonal veggies. We will occasionally bring in produce from other local organic growers to increase weekly variety.
Value or variety lost in one week (due to crop failures, weather, or pest issues) will be made up in future weeks.
Lock in prices now
The prices of vegetables is expected to rise according to this Dalhousie Study. As a member you lock in your prices now and will not be subject to the fluctuations of veggie prices at the farmers’ market.
Members-only recipe section! You will learn how to use everything from beet tops to potato water… nothing will go to waste. This will come to you as a weekly blog into your email box.
Grocery Planning List
Along with recipes and stories from the field, you will receive a list of anticipated box contents a few days before your box pick-up day. This will help you plan your grocery shopping for the week. Sometimes we have to make last-minute changes on harvest days, but you can count on receiving most of the items listed in your newsletter.
Because we are a co-op of four farms, we’re able to grow a huge diversity of crops for our CSA members. We try to offer at least one choice each week; you might get to choose between chard or kale, salad turnips or radishes, kohlrabi or cabbage, zucchini or cucumbers. The earlier you’re able to arrive, the more choices will still be available!
We are passionate about our veggies, but we understand that sometimes you just don’t want another bulb of garlic, or no matter how hard you try, you just can’t get into salad turnips. So we came up with the Swap Box, where you can trade in an item you don’t want, and take something you do.
For each new person you refer who signs up for our CSA program, you will receive a $10 market credit which can be used at the Merville Organics stand at the Comox Valley Farmers’ Market! A new member is someone who has never been in our CSA program before. To receive your credits the person you refer MUST provide us with your contact information on their sign-up form. You do not have to be a CSA member to take advantage of our referral program, so if you love what we do but can’t commit for this year you’ll get a little bonus from us for promoting our program.
Your recommendation is the highest compliment we could receive as we strive to ensure you get the freshest, highest quality organic produce we can provide.
Merville Organics CSA Policy
The value of shares will average out at $28.50 worth of produce per week. Because CSA members share in the risks and benefits of farming, value lost in one week’s share will be made up in future weeks. Shares delivered to our off-farm pick-up locations include a fuel surcharge for the season to help us get your vegetables to a convenient location.
There are three ways to pay. You can send us a cheque (address provided in the mandatory form here) or e-transfer, or you can go to our webshop and pay by credit card (please note there is a small fee to help cover credit card fees.) We also accept cash but please email us to set up a meeting.
Picking Up Your Order
Shares are picked up once a week by members at their chosen pick-up location. If you miss your pick up due to unforeseen circumstances, don’t worry, we’ll hold onto it for you for two days after your missed pick-up day. After that we will donate it to Lush Valley who will ensure that food goes to folks who might not otherwise have access to fresh, organic produce.
We ask that CSA members commit to reading email messages from us. It’s important that we have an efficient way of getting in touch if there are any changes to your pick-up location or time. It’s also important to us that you know a bit about what’s happening at our farms every week. It’s good to stay connected!
If you are going on vacation, please drop us a line to let us know when you will be away at email@example.com. We can provide you with market credit for a missed week as long as we are informed at least one week in advance. Please note, this credit must be redeemed at the farmers’ market within the calendar year.
All shares include a non-refundable deposit of $50. If you are unhappy with the CSA program and wish for a refund, we will reimburse you for the remaining weeks of shares minus the non-refundable deposit.
